Psychological Counselling and Therapy for Panic Attacks in Port Moody BC | Expressions Counselling

Panic attacks, while quite intense to experience in the moment, are thankfully something that can be prevented over time. Professional psychological counselling and therapy for panic attacks is recommended as you can be gently guided towards a calmer nervous system and state of mind while also receiving emotional support.

What Causes Panic Attacks?

Panic attacks can often become a “fear of fear” cycle, where a person starts becoming scared not only of stress or triggers, but also of the physical sensations of anxiety itself (such as a racing heart, chest tightness, dizziness, or shortness of breath). When someone learns to ride the wave of fear, recognize that these somatic symptoms are uncomfortable but not dangerous, and respond with less fear toward them, the intensity often reduces and the panic can pass more quickly.

A helpful way to think about this is like a pot of water boiling over. If stress, emotions, grief, trauma, or unmet needs keep building inside without being acknowledged or processed, the “pot” can become too full and eventually boil over through anxiety, panic, irritability, or physical symptoms. Sometimes panic is not only about the immediate trigger, but also about what has been building underneath the surface.

At times, panic can also be connected to underlying emotions, stress, trauma, or experiences that someone may be pushing down or avoiding. Sometimes people may be living in ways that do not fully align with their needs, values, boundaries, or inner sense of consent/consensus, which can create internal tension and distress. Panic attacks may occur on their own or be associated with anxiety disorders and other emotional difficulties.

In treatment, we explore what may be triggering the panic, what it is associated with (e.g., stress, trauma, avoidance, health anxiety, or life patterns), and how it is being maintained. We can also help prevent panic from building by supporting clients in processing difficult emotions, understanding their nervous system responses, and living with greater inner consensus—where their choices, values, emotions, and boundaries feel more aligned. Based on this understanding, we create a treatment plan that may include psychoeducation, nervous system regulation, exposure-based work, emotional processing, or other strategies tailored to the person’s needs.

At Expressions Counselling, we take great care in assessing your current situation and causes in a welcoming and inclusive space. Together, we can create personalized plans and provide tools that are proven to regulate anxiety, lessen the likelihood of panic attacks from occurring, and overcome challenges that may hold you back from reaching your goals.

What Counselling treatments do we offer for panic attacks?

• EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

EMDR can be helpful when panic attacks are connected to trauma, unresolved distress, or past experiences where the body learned to stay in “alarm mode.” Sometimes panic is not just about the present moment, but the nervous system reacting as if danger is still there. EMDR helps process stuck memories, body sensations, and emotional experiences so the nervous system becomes less reactive. It can also help if panic is linked to fears like losing control, health anxiety, or earlier experiences of feeling trapped, unsafe, or overwhelmed.

• IFS (Internal Family Systems / Parts Work)

IFS helps explore the different “parts” of a person that may be involved in panic. For example, one part may be highly anxious and trying to protect you from danger, while another part may fear losing control, embarrassment, or being alone. Sometimes panic can happen when protective parts become overwhelmed. Rather than fighting anxiety, IFS helps people understand these parts with curiosity, reduce internal conflict, and build more inner calm, trust, and consensus.

• CBT with Exposure Therapy

CBT is one of the most researched treatments for panic attacks. It helps identify thoughts such as “I’m dying,” “I can’t breathe,” or “I’m losing control,” and gently challenge catastrophic interpretations of anxiety. Exposure therapy is especially helpful because panic often becomes a fear of fear cycle. People start fearing the body sensations themselves (heart racing, dizziness, chest tightness). With gradual exposure, clients learn to face these sensations or feared situations without escaping or avoiding them. Over time, the brain learns: this feels uncomfortable, but it is not dangerous, and the fear reduces.
