How Do I Reset When Everything Feels Overwhelming?

When you’re overwhelmed, even the smallest things can feel like too much. Sound familiar? The importance of resetting your mind and body cannot be overstated—it helps you get back on track and shift away from the negative mindset you may have momentarily adopted. That’s why taking the time to reset—both mentally and physically—is crucial for regaining balance.

So, what are some ways we can reset?

1. Deep breathing. Focus on your breathing when you feel like you are on the verge of a mental breakdown. Try the 4-4-6 method: inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 4 seconds, and exhale for 6 seconds. This activates your body’s relaxation response, helping to calm your nervous system.

2. Name that feeling. Check in with yourself by identifying and sitting with those negative emotions. Validate these emotions and let yourself know that it’s completely normal to feel this way during overwhelming moments.

3. Make a priority list. Write down all the tasks you need to get done in order of importance. This will allow you to focus on one thing at a time, helping you slow down and regain control. A priority list is also helpful because you can see what tasks can be delegated to others so you’re not carrying everything alone.

4. Take breaks. Stepping away—even for a short walk—gives your mind and body a reset, improving both your mental and physical well-being.

5. Sleep. If you can find time to go to bed earlier and give yourself that time to rest and recharge, you will notice that you react less intensely to daily stressors. Additionally, taking a quick 20-minute power nap can be beneficial as well.

6. Set boundaries. If you feel pressured by others’ expectations to the point of exhaustion, it might be time to set boundaries. Saying no or limiting commitments can protect your energy and well-being.

7. Move your body. Engaging in physical activity, even if it’s just stretching or dancing to your favourite song, can help release built-up tension and improve your mood. Exercise produces endorphins, which naturally reduce stress and anxiety.

8. Practice mindfulness or meditation. Taking a few moments to focus on the present can help break the cycle of overwhelming thoughts. Try guided meditation, body scans, or simply sitting in silence and observing your surroundings without judgment.

9. Engage in a creative outlet. Activities like journaling, painting, playing music, or even baking can give your mind a break from stress and allow you to express emotions in a healthy way. Creativity helps shift focus away from stressors and provides a sense of accomplishment.

10. Connect with someone you trust. Talking to a friend, family member, or therapist can help you process your emotions and gain a fresh perspective. Sometimes, simply knowing that someone understands what you’re going through can bring comfort and relief.

All of the strategies mentioned above can help you emotionally and physically reset. The demands of daily life can be overwhelming, but it’s up to us to recognize when we need to pause and take care of ourselves. If you’re struggling to manage stress, consider seeking guidance from a counsellor who can support you in developing healthier coping strategies.
