Neurofeedback for ADHD Combined with Help for Executive Functioning

Have you or your loved ones been diagnosed with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)? Whether you have received an official diagnosis or you’re navigating its life-altering symptoms in adulthood, Expressions Counselling now offers further empowerment for your mind. Our neurofeedback for ADHD combined with help for executive functioning service comes complete with NeurOptimal®, a non-direction, non-linear, and dynamical brain-training system. This technology can be sought after from any clients who have been needing extra assistance managing their ADHD symptoms. It is not a medical treatment or a diagnostic tool.

How Does Neurofeedback for ADHD Work?

Think of NeurOptimal®, the device we use in our service, as a training system for your brain, like taking your mind to the gym for a workout. In this example, clients are trainees and the neurofeedback therapist is the trainer. NeurOptimal® is the only brain training system of its kind in the world and was developed based on the philosophy that given the right conditions and information, people can heal themselves. This is a philosophy that shares some of our values at Expressions Counselling, one we bring to our sessions.

During sessions, NeurOptimal® provides trainees (clients) with real-time feedback on their brain activity and empowers the brain to make its own adjustments. In simpler terms, it acts like a mirror, one that your brain can “see” in order to understand how it’s functioning and to make adjustments if needed or wanted. The environment in which neurofeedback for ADHD is provided at our clinic is a warm, quiet, and welcoming space.

No diagnosis is required in order to receive NeurOptimal®’s benefits, and the device doesn’t push the brain in any direction. Further, NeurOptimal® is a technology that respects that all brains function in an individual and unique way—in simpler terms, there is no one way for a brain to be healthy.

How Does Executive Functioning Support Help?

ADHD affects many skills connected to executive functioning including time management, working short and long-term memory, and impulse control, making everyday tasks and responsibilities overwhelming. Executive functioning support combined with neurofeedback technology for ADHD can make a significant difference by helping them manage the mental processes involved in planning, organizing, starting, and completing tasks.

This support doesn’t change a person’s abilities; instead, it creates an environment where the abilities can be used more effectively, leading to many of the benefits listed below.

What are the Benefits of this Service?

First, we must mention that each client and their needs for improving executive functioning and reducing ADHD symptoms is unique, therefore each session using NeurOptimal® will be different from client to client. Some things people have mentioned noticing after a few sessions include the following:

  • Improved focus*
  • Improved productivity
  • Reduced stress*
  • Help with sleep management*
  • Help with promoting a healthy lifestyle
  • Help with keenness and sharper mental clarity
  • Boost in self-esteem
  • Feeling more calm and certain
  • Coping better with things
  • Reduced overwhelm with tasks
  • Ability to make goals more achievable
  • Greater confidence in executive functioning and daily living

*Some clients report improvements in focus, stress regulation, and sleep; however, research results are mixed for ADHD symptom reduction. As we mentioned before, every client’s session is unique, and as such the ways our neurofeedback technology combined with executive functioning help is also different.

Before You Book

If you choose to try out our service, it can be helpful to set clear, measurable goals and track outcomes (such as ratings or functional targets) to evaluate whether it’s proving useful after 1-3 sessions. If you don’t notice the meaningful benefits listed above, then you should not continue. Neurofeedback combined with help for executive functioning may work best as a complementary therapy for some people rather than as a replacement for established care strategies such as medication (when appropriate), CBT/skills-based coaching, counselling, and school and/or workplace accommodations.
