Counselling for Burnout | Expressions Counselling

Have you been coming home from work not only exhausted, but also disconnected from everything around you? As information continues to be gathered and studies continue to be actively conducted about burnout, it’s clear that more and more people in Canada are experiencing this condition. If you need compassionate counselling for burnout that is not only collaborative between you and your therapist but also customized based on your needs, this service is offered from our entire team at Expressions Counselling.

What is Burnout?

Not to be confused with exhaustion that is temporary, burnout is a constant state of exhaustion, where even the simplest tasks to be done feel overwhelming and monumental to complete. Many people assume that burnout is simply the result of working too many hours. While workload can certainly play a role, research and clinical experience suggest that burnout is often more complex. One of the strongest contributors is spending prolonged periods of time doing work that feels disconnected from your values, identity, or sense of purpose.

This sense of disconnection is sometimes described as living without inner congruence—when there is a gap between who you are, what matters most to you, and how you are spending your time. Someone can work long hours doing meaningful work and remain energized, while another person may feel emotionally exhausted despite working fewer hours because their work feels misaligned with who they are or what they value.

For individuals with complex post-traumatic stress disorder (CPTSD), this disconnect can be even more pronounced. Many people have learned to prioritize others’ needs, seek approval, or prove their worth through achievement while ignoring their own emotional needs. As a result, they may struggle to set boundaries, say no, or recognize when they are operating from survival rather than choice.

What is the Relationship Between Burnout and Medical Conditions or Caregiving?

Burnout is not limited to the workplace. It can also develop when someone is managing an ongoing medical condition, undergoing prolonged medical treatment, or caring for a loved one who is unwell. Experiences such as fertility treatment or IVF, chronic pain, cancer treatment, repeated medical appointments, or supporting a partner or family member through illness can require significant emotional, physical, and practical energy over an extended period of time.

Medical treatments such as IVF can be particularly exhausting because life may begin to revolve around appointments, medications, procedures, test results, finances, and waiting for the next step. Similarly, caregivers may spend so much time attending to another person’s needs that their own needs, relationships, rest, and routines gradually move into the background.

Over time, this ongoing responsibility and uncertainty can contribute to emotional exhaustion, irritability, difficulty concentrating, feeling disconnected from yourself or others, and a sense that you are simply “getting through” each day. Counselling can provide a space to process these experiences, recognize your own needs, establish boundaries where possible, and find ways to care for yourself while navigating circumstances that may not be within your control.

What is the Best Therapy for Burnout?

The best therapy for burnout will look different from person to person because the circumstances contributing to burnout are not always the same. At Expressions Counselling, therapy is personalized to understand and address the factors contributing to burnout rather than focusing only on managing symptoms.

For some people, this may involve workplace stress, perfectionism, difficulty setting boundaries, or feeling disconnected from their values. For others, burnout may develop while navigating a medical condition or treatment such as IVF, living with chronic pain, or caring for a loved one. In these situations, therapy may also focus on coping with uncertainty, recognizing personal limits, processing difficult emotions, and finding ways to care for yourself when the circumstances causing stress cannot simply be changed.

Counselling for burnout can help individuals reconnect with their values and needs, build self-compassion, establish healthier boundaries, and create a more sustainable way of living. The goal is not always simply to “do less,” but to better understand what is draining your emotional and physical resources and identify meaningful changes within your control.
