Infertility Related Counselling
Have you been trying your best to start the family of your dreams? The discovery that you or your spouse struggle with infertility is a difficult thing to admit. Infertility and its limitations is an obstacle that can feel very heavy and consuming.
Infertility is not only tough on the people who are trying to get pregnant out of affection and love of children; it’s also tough on the spouses who want to experience parenthood alongside them. It can lead to anxiety and depression for the person experiencing infertility and for their partner. It can also lead to complex relationship dynamics that can be hard to navigate.
In many of our world’s cultures and societies, there’s often a stigma of silence that’s usually connected to struggling with infertility as well as societal pressures, both vocalized outwardly by family members and implied subconsciously, to raise a family. These contribute to many symptoms of mental health issues surrounding struggling with infertility, including a sense of inner shame, guilt, and even depression. It can also deeply affect the decision-making process as well as arise from past medical trauma.
At Expressions Counselling, we realize that infertility not only comes with these stigmas but also a sense of grief and loss; you and/or your significant other are mourning both for the loss of a life you’re not able to meet and a future path that’s been blocked off. Our team understands that this grief and the path to finding new ways forward is different for everyone, and no one should have to face this journey alone. We offer compassionate infertility counselling services so that each couple and individual can find comfort, connection, and healing in a way that feels right for them. Many of our team members have had their own personal challenges with infertility and IVF, so it’s possible for us to pair you up with a counsellor who has had their own personal experiences.
In collaboration with Butterfly Run, we run monthly infertility support groups from our downtown Vancouver BC location, usually landing on the third or fourth Thursday of each month, from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, starting September 2027. Attending these groups is free of charge and it’s a great way to meet others who are struggling with infertility. Many individuals experiencing infertility also struggle with feelings of isolation, and these groups aim to foster connection, understanding, and support.
Counselling for infertile couples can help to not only provide much-needed emotional support, but also it can help couples navigating medical trauma management, making informed decisions, and finding new solutions and alternatives to raising a family. Using emotionally-focused therapy, couples and individuals from all walks of life who are navigating this challenge can receive the support and professional guidance they need.
Infertility counselling is available both in person and online at Expressions Counselling, and can be sought after regardless of you and/or your spouse’s/partner’s races, backgrounds, colours, genders, marital statuses, and ethnicities. Our infertility counselling services are available in multiple languages and locations.
